Horizontal Rod Railing on Charcoal Farmhouse
Project Overview
Slim black horizontal-rod railing installed on the covered porch and down a full run of exterior stone steps at a modern charcoal-sided home with a stacked-stone veneer base and cedar porch posts.
Analysis
The homeowners wanted a railing that would read as nearly invisible against the dark lap siding while still meeting the 36" residential guard height. Horizontal rods were chosen over vertical pickets so the sightline to the bluestone walk and landscaping stays open.
Process
Site measure of the porch and stair run, shop fabrication of the post and rod sections, powder coat, one-day installation, and a final level and plumb check on every bay.
Outcome
A code-height guard that disappears against the dark siding and lets the stonework and bluestone walk stay the focal point of the entry.

Materials Used
Black powder-coated aluminum posts and top rail with 3/8" horizontal rod infill, cast aluminum post bases, stainless fasteners, and surface-mount base plates anchored into the stone treads.
Methods & Techniques
Posts were laid out to the stair rise and run on site, base plates anchored into the stone with mechanical anchors, rod infill tensioned level between posts, and all cuts sealed before touch-up.
